UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has arrived in Kazan to participate in the BRICS summit, the press service of the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan reports.
“At the Kazan International Airport, Mr. Guterres was welcomed by the Chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan Farid Mukhametshin,” the statement said.
During the summit, Guterres is going to confirm his position on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. He is expected to voice the stance at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The decision by the Portuguese UN Secretary General to attend the summit hosted by Vladimir Putin has been met with criticism from Ukraine and its allies.
“This is a wrong choice that does not advance the cause of peace. It only damages the UN’s reputation,” the Kyiv foreign affairs ministry posted on X on Monday based on reports of his attendance, noting that he had declined to attend a peace summit in Switzerland to which Ukraine invited him earlier this year.
The BRICS summit began in Kazan on October 22 and will last until October 24. Following the meetings, representatives of the member countries of the association will draw up a final declaration. Since the beginning of 2024, Russia has been chairing BRICS for the fourth time – under the motto “Strengthening multilateralism for equitable global development and security.”
