“We Are Watching Closely,” Duale Warns Hospitals Over SHA Fraud
NAIROBI, Kenya – In a stern address to the nation, Defense Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale issued a strong warning to healthcare institutions engaged in fraudulent activities targeting the Social Health Authority (SHA). The statement, which underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding public funds, signals a new wave of accountability in the health sector.
“We are watching closely,” Duale declared, emphasizing that any hospital found complicit in SHA-related fraud will face severe legal and operational consequences. The announcement comes amid growing concerns over fraudulent claims, inflated invoices, and ghost patients draining critical resources from the SHA—a key pillar of Kenya’s universal health coverage (UHC) agenda.
The government has initiated a multi-agency effort involving the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Ministry of Health to audit claims and track financial flows within SHA-linked medical facilities.
“This isn’t a warning. It’s a promise,” Duale added. “Those stealing from the sick will be pursued, prosecuted, and punished.”
The SHA was established to expand access to affordable and quality healthcare for all Kenyans, particularly low-income households. However, since its rollout, the system has been plagued by reports of exploitation by some private and public hospitals.
Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha welcomed Duale’s stance, noting that “protecting the SHA is protecting Kenya’s health future.” She confirmed that a list of facilities under investigation has been compiled, and suspensions may follow pending findings.
Public reaction has been largely supportive, with many Kenyans taking to social media to applaud the move. #ProtectSHA has begun trending on X (formerly Twitter), with citizens sharing personal stories and calling for transparency.
