Questioning the Motives Behind the Horn of Africa Forum in Djibouti.

Ayrotv.com- On November 25, 2024, the Horn of Africa Forum, organized by the Heritage Institute for Policy Studies, convened in Djibouti, raising critical questions regarding its intentions, particularly concerning Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. As discussions unfold, scepticism looms over the motivations of the Heritage Institute, especially in light of their apparent disregard for the federal government’s stance on sovereignty issues.

One of the most concerning aspects of this forum is the participation of individuals who have previously disrespected the Somali government, including scholars from Hargeisa who have publicly challenged the authority of Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Maalin Fiqi. This raises an essential question: Is the Heritage Institute intentionally providing a platform for voices that undermine the federal government of Somalia? Such actions could be perceived as an attempt to legitimize the secessionist regime in Hargeisa, which has long sought international recognition while operating outside the framework of Somali national unity.

Moreover, the forum has been notably silent on the blatant violations of Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty by Ethiopia. This omission is alarming and suggests a potential agenda that prioritizes external interests over Somalia’s national concerns. Are the discussions meant to pave the way for Ethiopia, alongside its allies—such as Israel and the UAE—to further annex portions of Somalia and exert control over strategic regions like the Gulf of Aden and the Bab el Mandeb? Such geopolitical manoeuvres could have dire consequences for Somalia’s future.

The question remains: What is the end game for the Heritage Institute? By facilitating discussions that could undermine the authority of the federal government, they risk exacerbating tensions within Somalia and fostering divisions that could lead to further instability. The participation of Somali scholars in this forum could be seen as a failure to uphold the principles of national integrity and unity, particularly at a time when the nation faces significant challenges.

In conclusion, the Horn of Africa Forum should prompt serious reflection among Somali leaders and scholars. The federal government of Somalia must critically assess the implications of engaging with entities that appear to undermine its sovereignty. As the situation develops, it is crucial for Somali representatives to prioritize their national interests and openly question the agendas of organizations like the Heritage Institute, ensuring that they do not inadvertently contribute to the fragmentation of Somalia. The preservation of Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty is paramount, and any dialogue that threatens this foundation must be approached with caution.
